Song: Teri Justajoo Album: Saaware Type: Bollywood Singers: Roop Kumar Rathod Music Director: Harpreet Lyricist: Info not available Rating: 4.2 This song got packaged as a bonus in a couple of albums I bought recently – Kailash Kher’s Chaandan Mein (mp3 CD) and Shor In The City. While I am glad I stumbled into this gem of a song, I am surprised that it hasn’t gotten a lot of attention (looks like it was released in 2008). Great singing, lovely acousticky sound and a “Sufi” feel. |
Song: Ek Din Aap Yun Album: Yes Boss Type: Bollywood Singers: Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu Music Director: Jatin-Lalit Lyricist: Javed Akhtar Rating: 4.3 Awesome romantic duet. Alka at her peak. |
Song: Pyar Kar Liya To Kya Album: Kabhi Kabhi Type: Bollywood Singers: Kishore Kumar Music Director: Khaiyyam Lyricist: Sahir Ludhiyanvi Rating: 4.5 Love this song. It’s simple but remains young and fresh even after all these years. Nice, upbeat melody. |
Song: Hothon Mein Aisi Baat Album: Jewel Thief Type: Bollywood Singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Bhupinder Music Director: S.D. Burman Lyricist: Majrooh Sultanpuri Rating: 4.7 Amazing rhythms on this song – long before directors like ARR shifted the focus of modern day music from melody to rhythm. This is an out-and-out Lata Mangeshkar song although Bhupinder has a small piece. |
Song: Mann Ki Lagan Album: Paap Type: Bollywood Singers: Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Music Director: Shahi Lyricist: Amjad Islam Amjad Rating: 5.0 This is the song that got me hooked to Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Apart from his awesome singing (aalaaps, sargams, harkats, the works), I love the live-music feel of this song. I’m not able to explain but the drums and harmonium have a natural, un-enhanced sound that’s extremely appealing. |
Song: Wada Karo Album: Aa Gale Lag Ja Type: Bollywood Singers: Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Sahir Ludhiyanvi Rating: 5.0 Evergreen R.D. Burman gem. Love the sound of the instruments – specially the electric guitar (and a cool bass as well), bongo and sax. Amazing rhythm in Lata’s delivery of “Chuo nahin…” line – the timing between words is exquisite. |
Song: Going Mobile Album: Who’s Next Type: Rock Artist: The Who Rating: 3.4 Not my favorite Who number. Roger Daltrey’s voice is conspicuous by its absence (Pete Townshend sings this one). Nice, wholesome rock neverthless. |
Song: Maine Pyar Kiya Album: Maine Pyar Kiya Type: Bollywood Singers: Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: Ram-Laxman Lyricist: Asad Bhopali Rating: 4.3 A nice melody that became a huge hit. One of the movies (QSQT and Ashiqui being the other two) that signaled a return to melody in Bollywood after a noisy, crass ’80s. Too bad that Ram-Laxman chose to plagiarize some of the songs in this album. |
Song: Dholi Taro Dol Baaje Album: Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam Type: Bollywood Singers: Kavita Krishnamurthy, Vinod Rathod, Karsam Sargathia Music Director: Ismail Darbar Lyricist: Mehboob Rating: 3.2 Dandiya song. Not much else to say. |
Song: Dheere Se Jana Album: Chupa Rustam Type: Bollywood Singers: Kishore Kumar Music Director: S.D. Burman Lyricist: Neeraj Rating: 3.6 This is a parody of the original “Dheere Se Jana Bagiyan Mein” sung by SDB himself. Kishore Kumar embellishes the light lyrics with funny vocal effects the way only he can. |
