Song: O Mere Pyar Aaja Album: Bhoot Bungla Type: Bollywood Singers: Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Hasrat Jaipuri Rating: 4.5 The song was outshadowed by “Aao Twist Karen” from the same movie despite being far superior to it. A shame, because it’s a really pretty melody and has Lata singing at what was arguably her peak. For a brief section in the song (end of first line in antara), R.D. Burman uses an instrument, that he would go on to own – the bongo. I’ve been seriously addicted to this song since I re-discovered it for this post. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada |
Song: Athmavin Album: Thenmavin Kombathu Type: Mollywood Singers: Yesudas Music Director: Beny Ignatious Lyricist: Girish Puthencheri Rating: 3.6 A sombre song that rides on Yesudas’ baritone voice. |
Song: Aa Jane Jaan Album: Inteqaam Type: Bollywood Singers: Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: Laxmikant-Pyarelal Lyricist: Rajinder Krishan Rating: 4.0 A “split personality” song with a sensuous, melodic half and a weird, dramatic, frenetic one. Unfortunately the two don’t go well together musically. The dramatic piece seems forced because it’s just a prop for the movie. Lata’s first cabaret song apparently. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada |
Song: Losing My Religion Album: Out of Time Type: Rock Artist: R.E.M. Rating: 5.0 Losing My Religion is one of those songs that grab you by your collar, shake you up and leave you stunned, the first time you hear it. In this case, it would be more appropriate if I said, the first time you see the video. Because, when the song first came out it was inseparable from the video and Michael Stipes’ uninhibited, freestyle dance in it. Huge mandolin song for anyone who likes the instrument. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Aali Re Album: No One Killed Jessica Type: Bollywood Singers: Tochi Raina, Biswasjit Chakraborty, Shriram Iyer, Raja Hassan, Anushka Manchanda, Sonu Kakar, Aditi Singh Sharma & Sonika Sharma Music Director: Amit Trivedi Lyricist: Amitabh Bhattacharya Rating: 3.5 Energetic song with raw lyrics. It has a rock structure with a bunch of folk influences injected into it. Really cool female chorus. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Zakhme Tanhai Mein Album: The Best Of Ghulam Ali Type: Ghazal Artist: Ghulam Ali Rating: 3.9 Not the ghazal maestro’s best but still pretty good. Listen to it for his silken voice. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada |
Song: Labon Ko Album: Bhool Bhulaiya Type: Bollywood Singers: KK Music Director: Pritam Lyricist: Sayed Quadri Rating: 4.3 I may have misgivings of Pritam’s originality but he packages his songs really well. Labon Ko is a treat to listen to. The acoustic guitar, the flute, the percussions and everything else fit together perfectly. And KK’s voice has never sounded as good as it has in this song. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Chandni Raat Hai Album: Baaghi Type: Bollywood Singers: Abhijeet, Kavita Krishnamurthy Music Director: Anand-Milind Lyricist: Sameer Rating: 4.0 This was a hugely popular song when it came out. It had a fresh sound to it. While not a great song, it was melodic unlike a lot of bad stuff that came out in the preceding years. Still a good listen. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Mudher Kanave Album: Majunu Type: Koliwood Singers: Harish Raghavendra, O.S. Arun, Bombay Jayashree Music Director: Harris Jayaraj Lyricist: Vairamuthu Rating: 3.9 Pretty good song except for the strident pop chorus. Awesome mridungam. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Yeh Shaam Mastani Album: Kati Patang Type: Bollywood Singers: Kishore Kumar Music Director: R.D. Burman Lyricist: Anand Bakshi Rating: 5.0 A song from an era when R.D. Burman, Kishore Kumar and Rajesh Khanna could do no wrong. Simple melody, powerful lyrics (specially in the context of the movie) and mind-blowing singing. The “Ooooo” vocalization (not exactly a yoddle, is it?) is specially cool. Lesser singers would struggle not to sound silly singing this piece. Kishore da manages to sound effortlessly gorgeous. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
