Song: Ajib Saneha Mujh Par
Album: Gaman
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Hariharan
Music Director: Jaidev
Lyricist: Shahryar
Rating: 5.0
This is one of my two favorite songs from “Gaman”, the other one being “Seene Me Jalan” by Suresh Wadkar. A haunting, beautiful tune and Hariharan shows his mastery in ghazals.

Song: Thenali
Album: Thenali
Type: Koliwood
Singer: Shankar Mahadevan
Music Director: A.R. Rahman
Lyricist: Arivumathi
Rating: 4.5
I love the ARR songs of this period. He had matured as a composer but, as in this song, still had the ability to surprise us. Highlights – the string section, Shankar’s vocal range, an amazing chorus.

Album: Lagaan
Type: Bollywood
Singer: A.R. Rahman, Srinivas

It was a hugely popular song but didn’t quite do it for me. Not sure why.

Song: Jugband Blues
Album: A Saucerful of Secrets
Type: Rock
Artist: Pink Floyd
Rating: 3.8
This is Syd Barret’s last contribution to Pink Floyd. It starts of like a peppy Beatles song and ends like a regular Pink Floyd track.

Song: Door Na Ja
Album: Jannat
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Rana Mazumder
Music Director: Pritam
Lyricist: Saeed Quadri
Rating: 3.8
Pretty good rock ballad. Pritam does a pretty good job at these. In the killer line that will get you hooked to the song – “Aur Kuch Der Mujhe” – Rana Mazumder sings his heart out.

Song: Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi
Album: Mr X in Bombay
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Kishore Kumar
Music Director: Laxmikant – Pyarelal
Lyricist: Anand Bakshi
Rating: 5.0
This song came early on in Anand Bakshi’s and LP’s career and was a clear indication of the long careers that lay ahead of them. Great teamwork here between them and Kishore Kumar.

Song: Dil Ka Haal Sune Dil Wala
Album: Shree 420
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Manna Dey
Music Director: Shankar-Jaikishan
Lyricist: Shailendra
Rating: 4.9
Although it has a nice, playful feel to it, it’s really a song that expresses the angst and the aspirations of the poor. Hats off to SJ, Shailendra and Manna Dey for somehow managing to balance the silly and the serious.

Song: Deem Deem Tana

Music Director: Harpreet
Lyricist: Nishu
Rating: 3.4
A short, energetic, interesting song. A rock song structure with classical influence.

Song: Pyar Me Dil Pe Maar Le Goli
Album: Mahaan
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar
Music Director: R.D. Burman
Lyricist: Anjaan
Rating: 4.0
Very cool but not Pancham’s best and certainly not Kishore Kumar’s. There’s a disco-ish sound in the interlude that would fit great in a Bappi Lahiri song, but the rest is classic R.D. Burman. Particularly like the electronic sounds in this song!

Song: Badshah In Jail
Album: Black Friday
Type: Bollywood
Artist: Indian Ocean
Rating: 4.7
Lesser known and not as flamboyant as “Bandeh” but in no way a lesser song. Susmit’s free flowing guitar is on full display in this song. I wish they had picked a better title for the song.
