Song: My Back Pages Album: 20 Essential Tracks From The Boxed Set: 1965-1990 Type: Pop/Rock Artist: The Byrds Rating: 4.6 This week’s FFP trigger is this poignant video Apple employees created for Steve Jobs’ 30th birthday. The song playing in the video is Bob Dylan’s My Back Pages. I did not have the Dylan song so I picked the really cool cover by the The Byrds. The same, confounding lyrics but catchier rendition. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Rubaru [Kyun Faaslein] Album: Angel Type: Bollywood Singer: Nadeem Khan, Shweta Pandit Music Director: Amjad – Nadeem Lyricist: Shabbir Ahmed Rating: 3.8 A mellow track and a great listen. A very nice acoustic guitar intro. Didn’t care too much for the plastic synth bridges. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Satyam Shivam Sundaram Album: Satyam Shivam Sundaram Type: Bollywood Singer: Lata Mangeshkar Music Director: Laxmikant – Pyarelal Lyricist: Narendra Sharma Rating: 5.0 LP could have won the Filmfare Award just for this song but they had a bunch of other great tracks in the album to back it up. Lata was not at her peak in 1978 but this song she announced that she was not giving up her number 1 slot anytime soon. Lovely alaaps and a powerful chorus. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Pinneyum Pinneyum Album: Krishnagudiyil Oru Pranayakaalathu Type: Mollywood Singer: Yesudas Music Director: Vidyasagar Lyricist: Girish Puthenchery Rating: 4.3 A really understated song. Has the feel of a lullaby in portions. |
Song: Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi Album: Mr X in Bombay Type: Bollywood Singer: Kishore Kumar Music Director: Laxmikant – Pyarelal Lyricist: Anand Bakshi Rating: 4.9 An all-time Kishore favorite. LP weaved upbeat instrumentation and tempo into the rather serious lyrics and solemn singing to create a unique happy-sad mood. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
Song: Athini Chithini Album: Thenali Type: Koliwood Singer: Hariharan, Chitra, Sivaraman Music Director: A.R. Rahman Lyricist: Arivumathi Rating: 4.8 A great track from an under-rated ARR album. One of those ARR songs that refuse to follow any template and keep throwing surprises at you. It’s got pop, Carnatic, a hint of Arabic and probably a few other influences that I can’t detect. Hariharan absolutely rocks in this song. About the credits – the femal voice is credited to Chitra but it doesn’t sound like her voice. Can anyone verify? iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada |
Song: Jabse Tumko Dekha Hai Sanam Album: Damini Type: Bollywood Singer: Kumar Sanu, Sadhna Sargam Music Director: Nadeem – Shravan Lyricist: Sameer Rating: 4.0 Except for the jhankaar beats style instrumentation and Kumar Sanu’s nasal vocals, this is a pretty good song actually. Love the melody. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada |
Song: Vaishakha Sandhye Album: Nadodikattu Type: Mollywood Singer: Yesudas Music Director: Shyam Lyricist: Yusufali Kecheri Rating: 5.0 A very, very good song. I had always assumed it was an Ilayaraja track given the melody and the instrumentation (a lovely violin solo being one). Found out only today that it’s been composed by Shyam. |
Song: Ahede Wafa Ahista Album: Gulfam Type: Ghazal Artist: Hariharan Rating: 5.0 If a song can be like massage, there is no better masseur than Hariharan. Ultra relaxing. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada |
Song: Koi Gata Main So Jata Album: Alaap Type: Bollywood Singer: Yesudas Music Director: Jaidev Lyricist: Harivansh Rai Bachchan Rating: 4.9 The perfect marriage of music and poetry. Pity that such a beautiful song has such cheesy picturization. iTunes US iTunes UK iTunes Canada Flipkart |
