What Are Your Most Favorite Non-Film Songs Of 2013?

A couple of weeks ago, we wrote a post about the best Bollywood songs of 2013. Since then, the top 10 rankings have change significantly. I am not surprised and my guess is it may change some more over the next few weeks. If you haven’t already rated already, please do.

Which brings us to the best non-film songs of 2013. Now this is a lot broader category than Bollywood, so what we’re talking about is the non-film songs on MySwar – which is mainly Hindi/instrumental tracks. Coke Studio dominates this list but this year also had some other significant albums, my favorites being Vasuda Sharma’s Attuned Spirits, Raghu Dixit’s Jag Changa and Jagjit Singh’s The Voice From Beyond. Here is the listing of the most popular, non-film songs of 2013 (as of now), and here’s our list of non-film albums released in 2013.

At this time, the top 10, non-film songs of 2013 are:

  1. Aao Balma (Coke Studio)
  2. Zindagi Jaisi Tamanna Thi (The Voice From Beyond)
  3. Khuda Ke Vaaste Apna Hisaab (The Voice From Beyond)

  9. Phir Le Aaya (MTV Unplugged)
  10. Kodagaana Koli Nungitha (Jag Changa)

Please do rate your favorites. We will finalize this list by mid January.

Please make your opinion count this year and give your ratings (registration/login required).

While you’ll find the complete list of the best rated Bollywood songs of 2013 here, the top 10 songs as of now are:

  1. Alvida (D-Day)

Custom Playlists On MySwar

Many of you have asked about being able to create your own playlists and I’m glad to report that we have rolled out custom playlists now on MySwar.

Custom playlists works pretty much as you would expect them to – All across the website, you’ll see a + sign against songs, provided a YouTube video is available. Clicking the plus sign lets you add the song to a queue (temporary) or lets you add it to a playlist (saved). Adding songs to a playlist requires you to be a registered user. The saved playlists are public and available to anyone who has the playlist URL, so you can share your playlists with friends. One advantage of a MySwar Playlist is that even if a YouTube video disappears, the song stays on the list (just doesn’t get played) and when we add another video back for the song, which we do periodically, your playlists remains intact.

Other than custom playlists, we have also put together a massive package of pre-built playlists of well-rated songs based on a number of things. You have a list of all the songs on MySwar with a rating of three and above – All-time Popular Songs. There is a list of well-rated songs that have released recently – Popular New Releases. A list of well-rated songs by year – one list for every year from 1941 to the present. A list of popular songs by decade. We have a whole bunch of playlists by artists – singers, composers and lyricists. And finally, playlists by genres.

Something to remember about the pre-built, popular playlists – these are shuffle playlists of 25 songs. So even if the actual list has a large number of songs, the packaged playlist will consist of 25 randomly picked songs. You can always get a fresh set of 25 songs by clicking the Shuffle button.

And the first custom playlist on MySwar? My own Kishore Favorites.

The Top 100 Bollywood Songs Of 2012

For the complete listing of songs with a rating of 3 and higher (on a scale of 5), go to the popular song listing for 2012 on MySwar.

Also check out the playlist of randomly-picked well-rated songs of 2012. (Note: Click Shuffle to refresh the playlist.)

If You Like Kun Faya Kun

A non-establishment, music-buffs-based group called RMIM Puraskar came up with it’s list of the best songs of 2011 this morning and Kun Faya Kun came out on top. So I decided to give to check out MySwar recommendations based on Kun Faya Kun. Here it goes:

Huq Ali – I was absolutely floored by this recommendation because I had never heard this song before and because it is brilliant! Musically, Huq Ali is as traditional a qawwali as Kun Faya Kun is modern. The song is relatively light on accompaniments – a harmonium, a tabla and the qawwals’ claps – but the voices of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mujahad Ali and the qawwal party have massive impact. If you’re not moved by this song, you’re probably made of rock or something. The video. I am not too sure about the official credits for Khayyam and Nida Fazli though. Please clarify in the comments if you know.

Bismillah – A very good song, mellow and soulful. I will go out on a limb and say that it’s as good a song as Kun Faya Kun. In my view, the only thing that goes against is that it’s not as hummable and doesn’t have Kun Faya Kun’s killer refrain hook.

Rangrez (Wadali Bros) – This is the song you have to listen to if you need to understand why there is so much about newcomer music director Krsna, who won 2012’s R.D. Burman Award from Filmfare. Not surprisingly, Rangrez appears in RMIM Puraskar’s list right below Kun Faya Kun.

Khwaja Ji Mere Khwaja Ji – A hidden, forgotten gem with some nice alaaps and harkats.

Madine Ki Galiyon Se – The song did not do it for me. One reason could be that Suresh Wadkar and Anwar’s voices don’t really seem suited for a qawwali. Another that it seems to follow a predictable filmi-qawwali template. One of those songs in which Anwar sounds uncannily like Mohd Rafi (blasphemy?!).

Tu Hi Tu – Some solid singing by Roop Kumar Rathod and Javed Ali is completely undone by two things – a) the extravagant filmi interludes, and b) the fact that the song is an un-credited rip-off of Allah Hu.

Aawan Akhiyan Jawan Akhiyan – Himesh’s voice (Aannnnnnwan Annnkhiyannnnnn….) totally kills what could otherwise have been a nice song.

More Haji Piya – Some interesting portions – sargams and the closing – but overall so-so.

Do Aalam Ka Sultan Hai – A simple, solid qawwali that gets you rocking and swaying. Wonder whether the Sabri Brothers credited on the song are the original Pakistani Sabri Brothers or the Indian ones. Probably the latter.

Allah Hi Reham – A lovely, lovely song. With Ustad Rashid Khan’s voice (watch for the killer opening), how can it not be?!

If You Like Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar

Yesterday was Kaifi Azmi’s birthday. I am picking up one of my favorite songs written by him to play the MySwar recommendations for Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar:

Tum Itna Jo Muskura Rahe Ho – The song on the top of the list is hardly surprising. It is similar to Jhuki Jhuki Si Nazar in many respects but still so unique. Lovely!

Dil Cheez Kya Hai – If we had to pick one album and one song that helped Asha Bhosle get out of the rut of non-serious songs, she found herself getting stuck in, in the late 70s, it would be Umrao Jaan and Dil Cheez Kya Hai. No frills, flourish, just simple, solid singing to a melodious composition.

Qubool Kijiye – I didn’t enjoy this song that much because it’s such an in-the-face tawaif-mujra song. It’s like Khayyam took Dil Cheez Kya Hai and re-made it for the front-benchers.

Hoshwalon Ko Khabar Kya – Really lovely song that came out when the popularity of ghazals in films had waned. Great composition by Jatin – Lalit and lovely, light lyrics by Nida Fazli.

Aayee Zanjeer Ki Jhankar – A nice, mellow song with pretty santoor sounds decorating it but I wish Khayyam (a lot of him on this list!) had picked a more accomplished singer. Kabban Mirza sounds off-beat, if not off-key at certain points.

Huzur Is Kadar – I love Gulzar’s serious stuff but I absolutely adore his light-hearted lyrics. And what composition by Pancham! A breath of fresh air in a serious album.

Tera Hijr Mera Naseeb Hai – A song in the same mould as Aayee Zanjeer Ki Jhankar but doesn’t do it for me because of the singer. Who is Kabban Mirza, by the way? Looks like the Razia Sultan (1983) songs are the only two he has ever sung in Hindi films.

Pyar Mujh Se Jo Kiya – People in HMV knew what they were doing when they packaged Arth/Saath Saath as a combination cassette. OK, so Jagjit Singh (and Chitra Sigh) was the obvious, common element across the two albums but it was more than that. The two complemented each other in ways I cannot find words for. Even to this day, if I start listening to Arth, I HAVE to listen to Saath Saath and vice versa.

Tumko Dekha To Yeh Khayal Aaya – Another happy, mellow song from Saath Saath. Chitra Singh is credited but only sings an alaap at the beginning of the song….thankfully!

Ye Zuban Humse Si Nahin Jati – Probably the most obscure song on this list. I guess, the two Kabban Mirza songs were equally obscure but Razia Sultan, at least had other well-known songs and was composed by Khayyam. By contrast, this song is from a relatively unknown movie, Shaayad (1978) and composed by a relatively unknown composer, Manas Mukherjee. Very well sung by Usha Mangeshkar. Nice!

Freaky Friday Playlist Nov-11-2011

Song: Dil Hoom Hoom Kare
Album: Rudaali
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music Director: Bhupen Hazarika
Lyricist: Gulzar
Rating: 3.9
Nice and mellow. Music of Assam for Dummies, like myself. RIP Bhupen Hazarika.
Song: Banao
Album: Soundtrack
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Papon
Music Director: Papon and the East India Company
Lyricist: Papon and the East India Company
Rating: 4.8
Papon hails from Hazarika's state and has the ability to finish the task that Hazarika started - that of bringing Assamese folk music into the mainstream. I saw him live at HRC, Bangalore once and boy did he have the crowd going with his folk songs! Singing for Bollywood hopefully will give him access to a wider audience and get him the attention he deserves. "Banao" itself is a light, mellow ode to marijuana, but the promise of Papon is evident. As Papon urges people to make a joint, one wonders how references to ganja made it past the censors. The song manages to hold attention with just an acoustic guitar and Papon's powerful voice. His gravelly "right now" is a treat to listen to. Here is an artist who needs to be heard more.
Song: The Tide Is High
Album: Blondie
Type: Reggae
Artist: Blondie
Rating: 4.6
Blondie's cover of John Holt's original skyrocketed to the top of the charts in 1980. Listen to the song and you can imagine yourself chilling by the beach.
Song: Megha Chhaye Aadhi Raat
Album: Sharmilee
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Lata Mangeshkar
Music Director: S.D. Burman
Lyricist: Neeraj
Rating: 5.0
The Burman clan dominated 1971. If R.D. Burman challenged the established music directors with Hare Rama Hare Kirshna and Amar Prem, S.D. Burman sounded of with Sharmilee and Tere Mere Sapne that he was not done yet. Once again S.D. Burman melded classicism in a song that his household helps could hum. It's amazing listening to the seamless transitions between the Western (electric guitar, accordion, bongo) and the Indian (sitar, tabla). And what does say about Lata in this song? People say she had peaked by then but I can't hear a single flaw in her voice in this song.
Song: Anthiveyil
Album: Ulladakkam
Type: Moliwood
Singer: Yesudas
Music Director: Ouseppachan
Lyricist: Kaithapram
Rating: 4.8
A lot of Ilayaraja in the song and I mean that as a compliment. Very melodic and happy.
Song: Ee Bhoomi
Album: Swarathma
Type: Indie
Artist: Swarathma
Rating: 4.2
This is a favorite in Swarathma concerts because it's simple and very easy to sing along with. I found the beginning a little oridinary but once the violin and the electric guitar kicks in, it's all good.
Song: Jago Sonewalo
Album: Bhoot Bungla
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Kishore Kumar
Music Director: R.D. Burman
Lyricist: Hasrat Jaipuri
Rating: 4.6
This was a big song in more ways than one. It was grand in scale with a large orchestra and chorus and a melodramatic style. It was also R.D. Burman's return as a solo composer after a 4 year hiatus following his first film Chote Nawab. His compositions for Bhoot Bungla were enough to keep him going till he gave his first blockbuster hit with Teesri Manzil. The only thing I didn't like about the song is the abrupt way in which it ends.
Song: Raga Todi
Album: Raga Jazz Style
Type: Fusion
Artist: Shankar - Jaikishan
Rating: 5.0
While this early fusion piece is itself awesome, what I marvel at is that an entire album of fusion music was cut in India as far back as the 1960s. We can thank a film artist strike for the album since it gave Shankar - Jaikishan some free time to conceptualize this album - a fusion of Jazz and Hindustani Ragas. The album had film industry regulars like Manohari Singh (saxophone) and John Pareira (trumpet) but SJ pulled a coup by roping in the legendary sitar player Ustad Rain Khan. A must buy for all fusion lovers. (I found the CD on the Saregama website).
Song: Jigsaw Falling Into Place
Album: In Rainbows
Type: Alternative
Artist: Radiohead
Rating: 5.0
An intense Radiotrack that is remniscent of Creep for the way in which it builds up tension before the eventual release. Love it.
Song: Wundoo Yeredoo
Album: I Am
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Rajiv Bhalla
Music Director: Rajiv Bhalla
Lyricist: Rajiv Bhalla
Rating: 3.4
Not a great song but foot-tapping and interesting for its use of Kannada lyrics with Punjabi.

Freaky Friday Playlist Oct-28-2011

Song: Valliya Nayagane
Album: Colours
Type: Fusion
Artist: Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan, Zaki Hussain
Rating: 5.0
Valliya Nayagane is a stunning, 15 minute instrumental track. A fusion of Carnatic, Western Classical and probably Hindustani music, it takes you on a beautiful journey. My favorite thing in this track is the harmony between KV's solo Carnatic violin and the Western string orchestra. The jugalbandi of the violin and the tabla is nice as well. This piece sounds a lot like another awesome track, Gopika Vasantham (His Highness Abdullah, 1990, Malayalam), because they share the same raga Shanmughapriya (I Googled!). Trivia - A.R. Rahman played the keyboard in this album and was credited as A.S. Dileep Kumar.
Song: Hold On
Album: Shango
Type: Pop, Rock
Artist: Santana
Rating: 4.3
Hold On manages to be mello and upbeat at the same time. It's got more pop and less blues and Latino than an average Santa song.
Song: Ehsaan
Album: Dil Kabaddi
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Sachin Gupta, Jaspreet Singh
Music Director: Sachin Gupta
Lyricist: Sachin Gupta
Rating: 3.3
OK melody but the heavy synth and percussions don't gel well with it.
Song: Khoon Chala
Album: Rang De Basanti
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Mohit Chauhan
Music Director: A.R. Rahman
Lyricist: Prasoon Joshi
Rating: 5.0
This brilliant song from a stellar ARR album is an illustration is of why Prasson Joshi is one of the best lyricists in the business today. I specially love this phrase - "Sawalon ki ungli, jawabon ki mutthi". ARR's crescendo and Joshi's words have the ability to move mountains. Mohit Chauhan may have found popularity with Tum Se Hi (Jab We Met, 2007) but it was with this song that he announced to Bollywood that he could no longer be ignored.
Song: Yehi Wo Jagah Hai
Album: Yeh Raat Phir Na Aayegi
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Asha Bhosle
Music Director: O.P. Nayyar
Lyricist: S.H. Bihari
Rating: 5.0
This is one of the many O.P. Nayyar songs that show that the man was a lot more than the Rhythm King he was proclaimed to be. What melody, what singing!
Song: Believe
Album: Believe
Type: Pop
Artist: Cher
Rating: 4.8
I love Believe, it's a great, great pop song. But I also have a grouse against it. It is this song that made the music business take a fancy to auto-tune and boy, have our ear drums been pummeled since then!
Song: Main Agar Kahoon
Album: Om Shanti Om
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Sonu Nigam, Shreya Ghoshal
Music Director: Vishal - Shekhar
Lyricist: Javed Akhtar
Rating: 4.7
A nice melody set on a waltz beat. I remember Sonu saying in an interview that to succeed in Bollywood, a good voice was not enough, that singers needed to sound stylish enough to match the image of the Bollywood hero/heroine. In this song, he shows us what he means by that. Although Shreya has a nice little cameo, this is Sonu's song all the way.
Song: Mana Janab Ne Pukara Nahi
Album: Paying Guest
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Kishore Kumar
Music Director: S.D. Burman
Lyricist: Majrooj Sultanpuri
Rating: 5.0
What a delightfully light and breezy song! If there was one music director who understood Kishore Kumar's raw talent before Aradhana, it was S.D. Burman. If the son popularized the use of everyday objects to produce music, it was perhaps the father who started started it off by using a bicycle bell in this song!
Song: Main Shair To Nahin
Album: Bobby
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Shailendra Singh
Music Director: Laxmikant - Pyarelal
Lyricist: Anand Bakshi
Rating: 4.3
Not a great song musically, but the simple lyrics and hummable melody made it a big success.
Song: Saiba
Album: Guzaarish
Type: Bollywood
Singer: Vibhavari Joshi, Francois Castelino, Shail Hada
Music Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Lyricist: Vibhu Puri
Rating: 3.9
A really good listen with vaguely Flamenco sounds. Really, really good singing by Vibhavari Joshi. Amazed I haven't heard more of her.
